Check Cashers

Utah law requires Check Cashers operating in the state to submit annually a Check Cashing Registration form, provide certain documents, and pay the applicable fee. The initial registration fee is $300, and the annual renewal fee is $200 thereafter. Check Cashers in Utah must renew active check-cashing registrations before December 31.

Follow these steps to file a Check Cashing Registration

1. Fill out the Check Cashing Registration Form

a. Be sure to fill out every line and cell on the Form. The Form was updated in November 2025. We will not accept old versions of the Form.

2. Attach required documents

a. You must provide evidence that your check-cashing business is registered with the Utah Department of Commerce Division of Corporations.
b. Review the instructions and Additional Information on Page 2 of the Form for information on obtaining required attachments and completing the Form.
c. Do not attach Utah Bureau of Criminal Identification reports to your registration submission. Instead, review them to identify any criminal convictions that require disclosure, select one statement on the Form, and keep the reports for possible review at a future examination.

3. Pay the registration fee

a. Make your check payable to the Utah Department of Financial Institutions or UDFI. We do not accept credit card payments.

4. Mail the entire package to:

Please ensure that your submission is complete and accurate to avoid any delays in the registration process. After we process your renewal, we will email a digital registration certificate that covers all check-cashing activity at every location of the business entity.

Reminders:

●  You only need to obtain the Utah Bureau of Criminal Identification or equivalent report once per employee for the length of their employment. If you have already obtained a BCI report for a current employee, you do not need to get another report.
●  If you select the box on the Form indicating your company has criminal convictions to disclose, a DFI employee will call you.
●  Do not send BCI reports to the DFI.
